(en) The earliest known London mint was established by the occupying Roman forces towards the end of the third century AD but was closed down again around forty years later. After the Romans had left Britain, there is evidence of coins being produced in London from around 650 AD but its beginnings seem to have been quite unstable. From around the time of Alfred the Great (871-899), the history of a mint in London appears to have been continuous and this starting point has been based upon the LONDINIA silver penny of Alfred. The exact location of the London mint at this time is not certain but one source has it in Old Change, close to the goldsmith's quarter in Cheapside.
